Notes: The list of “Shilling Volumes” on the recto of the back wrapper identifies “The Gordon Riots” as No. 12 in Volume II. ( The “(xii)” at the foot of [1] indicates the number of this title in the “Historical Papers” series.)
At the foot of p. “177" an “M” appears toward the left margin and a “2" toward the right; at the foot of p. “179,” centered, appears “(xii*)”; at the foot of p. “185,” toward the left margin appears “M*”, and toward the right margin “2".

All copies identify “The Gordon Riots” as “A Lecture given at St. George’s Students’ Union, Southwark.” In a letter to Campbell Dodgson, December 1891, Johnson writes: “Twice I have held forth to Irish audiences upon the Gordon Riots, at the Dominicans in Hampstead and elsewhere: and I am becoming notorious in that capacity. . . .” (R. Notes: “The Gordon Riots” appears to be the same typesetting as the previous two texts, except that it differs from Copy 1 in the following respects: the first page has “12" at the foot toward the left margin, as opposed to “(xii)” centered in Copy 1; pages 2 through 24 are appropriately numbered “2" through “24”; lacks printer’s marks at foot of p. 7 [i.e., p. “177" in Copy 1] and has “12*” toward the left margin rather than “(xii*)” at foot of p. 9 [i.e., p. “179" in Copy 1]; and lacks printer’s marks at the foot of p. 15 [i.e., p. “185" in Copy 1].

Although separate publications of “The Gordon Riots” have been listed first, in their obvious order of precedence, it seems clear that neither is the first printing. The listing of numerous “Historical Papers” after this title on the recto of the rear wrapper of Copy 1, as well as its pagination, appear to disqualify it, and Copy 2, the “tenth thousand,” is clearly out of the running. The text in the collected volume, Copy 3, is more promising in that it is properly paginated and appears under a volume title with the correct date of publication. Furthermore, the contents of the volume containing Copy 3 were not cut together before binding, and it is clear that this volume is a binding-up of items that were separately printed and cut. It seems reasonable, given this fact the separate pagination of “The Gordon Riots” within this volume, that it originally appeared as a separate publication. Indeed, a copy in printed wrappers, with proper pagination, is offered on ABE. It remains to be determined whether this is the first printing, and whether it differs in any respect other than the addition of wrappers from Copy 3. Notwithstanding its obvious scarcity, “The Gordon Riots” appears to have been reprinted a number of times, both separately and in collections of articles entitled both “Historical Papers” per the recto of the back wrapper of Copy 1 and “Publications of the Catholic Truth Society” per the title-page of the collection including Copy 3.

All copies identify “The Gordon Riots” as “A Lecture given at St. George’s Students’ Union, Southwark.” In a letter to Campbell Dodgson, December 1891, Johnson writes: “Twice I have held forth to Irish audiences upon the Gordon Riots, at the Dominicans in Hampstead and elsewhere: and I am becoming notorious in that capacity. . . .” (R. Roseliep, ed., Some Letters of Lionel Johnson, High Wycombe, England and Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1954, p. 117).
